UCSB Winthrop Undergraduate Research Grant for Students in the Division of Social Sciences - DEADLINE: Friday, June 7, 2024

UCSB Winthrop Undergraduate Research Grant for Students in the Division of Social Sciences >>>>> APPLY HERE <<<<<

The Winthrop Research Grant provides up to $2,500 in research funding to support an outstanding undergraduate student with demonstrated financial need in the Division of Social Sciences. This grant is intended to foster student interest in exploring novel approaches to research and critical thinking in the face of diverse real-world social problems.  We will consider any research project focused on studying a contemporary social problem.

Students must be majoring in a department in the Division of Social Sciences at UCSB. Students must be taking or going into upper-division coursework in the major, making normal progress toward a degree, and in good standing.

To apply, students will:

  1. Write a short abstract describing their project

  2. Write a 2-page, double-spaced research proposal (see below)

  3. Write a brief personal statement

  4. Secure a faculty or graduate student mentor who will guide them through the research project.  The expectation is for the mentor to provide regular meetings with the Winthrop scholar and in other ways provide guidance for the proposed research project.

In addition to recruiting a research mentor, we encourage applicants to seek affiliation with one of the many Social Science-oriented Centers or Initiatives on campus, including those on the SOSC Dean’s office initiatives listed here, the Center for Black Studies Research, and the Chicano Studies Institute.  Please note that this is encouraged, but not required.

Winthrop scholars will be required to present their findings to a group of Social Sciences administrators, staff, and faculty in Fall 2025.

The deadline for submitting materials is Friday, June 7, 2024, at 4pm PT. All proposals should be submitted to ssdean@ltsc.ucsb.edu.  Please write in the subject line: “Winthrop Undergraduate Research Grant”.
